DECOUPAGE PROJECTS

Decoupage or Découpage is the art of decorating an object by gluing colored paper cutouts onto it in combination with special paint effects, gold leaf and other decorative elements. Commonly, an object like a small box or an item of furniture is covered by cutouts from magazines or from purpose-manufactured papers.

Brush holder

Cardboard container decopugaed with napkins (my favorite store IKEA - one layer of a napkin).

Valentine heart from yarn

Very easy project even for kids to handle. First we soaked the yarn in pod podge, then we spread it on a aluminum tray I drew the heart shape with sharpie on.  You can use any surface that would not soak in the pod podge. And we let it dry.

Valentine lantern

Picked jar turned into Valentine lantern.  I have a puncher for the hearts (but you can do them by hand), I applied thin layer to the pickle jar attached the hearts and they another layer over...The mod podge dries really fast so make sure work is small sections. I usually keep the brush in water if I need to take breaks (life with kids ;O).

Drink coasters

This was a project my kids and I made for garden club fundraiser. All you need is tiles, interesting paper and felt on the bottom (small pieces for each corner will work).
used small furniture felts used old maps, calendar pictures  and napkins (only one layer, there are sometimes 2) and mod podge.

Stone paper weights

Fun project for our Garden club fundraiser.  All you need is rocks, paper cut outs and felt for the bottom (optional).
I used IKEA napkins once again. This is the real decoupage, i cut out only the ants and mod podged them to the rocks. I put one extra coat on the whole surface of the rock to make it look even. These make great gifts.

Decoupaged plates

Since we had so many ants left from another project and a few plates that were never used we decided to have some fun. We decoupaged a few ants on the plates. They were sold at a fundraiser for our Garden club.
Tip: if you really really miss the original lovely plates you can just soak them in water and the ants will come off.

Small lantern

Another simple lantern I helped my girl to make.
Supplies: napkin with cute design (one layer), mod podge, scissors, candle.

Decoupaged pumpkin

An old pumpkin, painted and decoupages with ants.

Coasters for horse lovers

We used tile as base....

Lamp shade with butterflies

My older and smarter sister got me into decoupage. it is such a fun way to be creative. So many uses and can make almost any surface more interesting. The best part you really don't need much skill and you can't mess up. Well yes you can, but not really. You can still call the mess up piece art ha ha.
You can use any surface and any material. I love using Mod Podge as it offers very smooth finish and it dries out fast. It is basically glue and varnish in one. There are people who make their own but I never tried, it is on my list though....I just need to finish my huge jar of store bough I got years ago ... small amount goes long way by the way...and yes thinner the layer the better the finish results.

Lamp shade

Plain paper lampshade decoupaged with old sewing pattern. Easy to do and adds touch of history.

Decoupaged sculpture

I used this old styrofoam head, decoupaged with napkin (one layer) and I call it a sculpture.

Decoupaged bowl

Plastic bowl decoupaged with old dictionary pages. I cut the paper into circles (used my favorite puncher) then applied with mod podge.

Magnetic board

I recycled this magnetic board into all year sewing loving person's magnetic board.
I peeled off the old paper (it was scratched anyhow), cleaned it and then put one coat of mod podge and attached old sewing patterns. I I put another coat of mod podge over.
The magnet's are also decoupaged.

This plastic bowl was turned into a patchwork catch it all containers.
I used mod podge and one layer of IKEA tissue. I will not use this for food or will not let it get wet (even though there is mod podge that can get wet).

Decoupaged bowl

An old bowl (found it in someone's trash - the nose was missing) turned into lovely bowl.  My friend's 10 year old girl did most of the work and enjoyed it very much.
